Jack Kelly: Adding to The "Kellection"! :)

Howdy! It was off to the antiques fair today.

Thankfully, I had beautiful weather and a smooth drive to the fair. After I arrived, I heard someone say there were 2000 vendors in attendance, and I believe it. The place was packed.

Naturally, I started right on the prowl for "Kellectibles", e.g., Jack Kelly memorabilia.

I found a vendor who was selling Western-themed comic books. I asked if he had any Maverick comic books. Nope, just old movie cowboy comics (like "Rex Allen").

Oh, well.

Then, a little more hunting and--eureka!

I found another very nice seller with Western items in his booth. I inquired about Maverick memorabilia, and he said, yes, he did have a couple things. I specified that I was particularly looking for Bart Maverick stuff. He said he had a Maverick jigsaw puzzle with Bart and Bret--no wait, he remembered, he'd left it at home. But, he did have another item he thought I might like, and he pulled this out of a box:

"Ah, yes, that will do!" I happily assured him. (It's a poster from an Argentine TV magazine.)

I made my purchase and pointed out the interesting "flub" on the poster with JK's wedding ring (as bachelor Bart, he usually wore a ring on his right pinky).

"You must be an expert!" the seller chuckled.

No, no, I demurred, only a "newbie" fan.

Then, he noted that when most people asked him about Maverick, they meant James Garner.

"Jack Kelly just kind of disappeared after that show," he added.

Well, of course, I filled in the blanks for him. I explained how Mr. K actually did a lot of acting work following Maverick and eventually went into politics. I even mentioned the book being written about JK.

The seller said he'd look for that jigsaw puzzle and try to bring it to the next antiques fair. I told him I'd keep an eye out for his booth.

Back to the hunt.

I came upon a booth with tons of DVDs and video tapes. Voila! Two official Warner Brothers Maverick tapes, new and still sealed in plastic. They were "Iron Hand":

and "Bundle From Britain":

Now, I've seen these episodes on Encore Westerns and have them recorded, but I just couldn't pass these tapes up for $1.00 each! If nothing else, the cover pix will brighten up my video shelf. ;->

Finally, I found something that isn't directly related to Jack Kelly or Maverick, but it gives some insight into real-life Western apparel and customs. It's a fascinating little booklet called The 1880 Cowboy Sketch Book, by Western artist Jerry Riness. It's filled with skillful pen-and-ink sketches of authentic 1880's cowboy hats, clothing, guns and tack. It also provides facts about these items.

For instance, about buckskin coats (like the one Bart is wearing on the "Iron Hand" cover above): "Buckskin coats were seldom worn by cowboys. They were more apt to be worn by military officers assigned to the 'Far West', but, occasionally one would find its way into the hands of some cowboy who lucked out in a poker game!"

(Guess Bart lucked out! ;->)

And, the "Mackinaw" sounds like what Bart wore in the "Ice Man" episode: "The 'Mackinaw' was a winter coat, made of a wool blanket. They were sometimes lined and had a rounded collar that stood up to cover the neck and back of the head in windy weather."

Incidentally, The 1880 Cowboy Sketch Book was published by The River Junction Trade Company, which can help you dress like a real cowboy...or a gambler. ;->

So, I definitely found some great stuff at the antiques fair.

The only thing I couldn't find was my car when it was time to leave. If the attendant who helped me to finally locate my vehicle in the vast outdoor parking area happens to read this: thanks again!!! :)

The Kelly Kollection - The Paper Chase

Howdy! Yesterday, I visited our local paper (ephemera) show. It occurs twice a year and features dozens of dealers selling vintage books, magazines, postcards, photos, posters, etc. I've attended this show for at least 15 years now and I usually make some good finds.

Unfortunately, this show has shriveled somewhat over the years, maybe due to the economy and/or eBay. The venue used to be completely filled with vendors--yesterday, not so much.

However, I managed to buy the Maverick comic book pictured above for just $5.00. The cover is kind of scuffy and a previous owner wrote their name on it in green ink. But, the inside is okay, and I saw the same issue in not much better shape up for bid on eBay for $16.99. So, I guess I got a pretty good deal. ;->

I bought a few movie magazines, too, but none had Jack Kelly in them.

Next weekend, I'm planning to try my luck at a major antiques fair almost 40 miles from my home. Sure, it's a bit of a drive, but it's usually worth it, and, at any rate, it's a nice trip into the country. :)

The Maverick Report - "The Deadly Image"

Hi! Here's a publicity still from "The Deadly Image". Now, if the girl pictured with Jack Kelly looks familiar, it's because, yes, she's Dawn Wells, who later came to fame as "Mary Ann" in Gilligan's Island.

And, if JK looks like he's out of his usual Bart Maverick uniform, that's because he's actually dressed up as the bad guy.

"The Deadly Image" takes the old "outlaw who looks like the hero" plot and pits Bart against a dastardly doppelganger named "Rod Claxton". Of course, everyone thinks Bart is Claxton, including the Army and even Claxton's girlfriend Caprice (played by Ms. Wells). Caprice does wonder, though, when she busses Bart and notices that his kiss is gentler than what she's used to!

The only person who isn't fooled is Caprice's elderly grandfather. He is blind and isn't misled by appearances. He discerns Bart's true character without seeing him.

Bart also encounters a former member of Claxton's gang, a wounded desperado (
Gerald Mohr) with his own connection to Caprice.

The big "reveal" where Bart finally comes face-to-face with his lawless lookalike comes near the end of the episode, and it's a doozy.

Claxton looks at Bart and is astonished by their resemblance.

"My own father wouldn't know the difference!" he exclaims.

"Mine would," Bart answers coldly.

Thankfully, the writers didn't go overboard with "evil twin" cliches. Claxton is dressed in black. However, Jack Kelly plays him with smoldering menace rather than with over-the-top villainy.

A reviewer in the Cincinnati Post newspaper noted, “Director John Ainsworth was particularly pleased with the way Kelly handled the [dual] roles. If you concentrate on his eyes, you'll see how he mastered the character differences. Thanks to technical magic, there's an interesting scene in which Dawn Wells is 'thrown' back and forth between the two Kellys".

The rest of the cast is great, too, especially frequent Maverick guest-star Mohr and
Abraham Sofaer, the character actor who portrays Caprice's grandfather. I first saw Sofaer in an episode of Four Star Playhouse that showed up on our local PBS station some years ago. He played a Native American chief in a story called "The Collar" which starred David Niven as an imprisoned priest. It was literally one of the best things I've ever seen on television.

And, speaking of character actors, "The Deadly Image" was co-written by Leo Gordon, who guest-starred on five Maverick episodes as "Big Mike McComb".

Horsin' Around With Bart Maverick!

Hi!

I found this great pic of Jack Kelly with "Goldie", the horse with the distinctive blaze that he often rode in Maverick. Bart Maverick, in desperate need of transportation, purchased Goldie from a passer-by in the Betrayal episode. Just a few episodes later, however, he gave Goldie to a young admirer in The Lass With the Poisonous Air.

However, Bart is seen riding the mare a few times after that, and she shows up again being currycombed by Edd "Kookie" Byrnes in Hadley's Hunters. I guess this is one pony that got around! (And, from what other viewers have noticed, "she" was actually a "he"...)

I also found this picture of Will Hutchins riding a horse with a similar blaze in Sugarfoot.

Sugarfoot was produced by Warner Brothers during the same era as Maverick, so I wondered if maybe this horse was "Goldie". It turns out that Hutchins rode the horse above (named "Sickle", presumably for its crooked blaze) for a while in Sugarfoot. Alas, according to Hutchins, Sickle wasn't the most cooperative cayuse at the studio. Here's the story. Sickle was replaced as Sugarfoot's mount by a horse named "Penny", so perhaps Sickle went on to play Goldie?
Could be! Anyway, here's a screen capture of Jack Kelly on Goldie/Sickle (center) from the Maverick episode "Duel at Sundown".

Jack Kelly on TV - Alias Chauncey Beauregard!

Hey, another YouTube find - JK in Alias Smith and Jones! Although his character's name--Dr. Chauncey Beauregard--may have a Maverick-like ring to it, the doc is actually the kind of guillible mark who usually got fleeced by Bart and Bret. And, if Kid Curry and Hannibal Heyes seem like a couple of Mavericks, well, Alias Smith and Jones was produced by Roy Huggins, creator of Maverick, and this episode was written by one "John Thomas James"--a.k.a. Roy Huggins.

Jack Kelly on TV - "Bear" With Me!

Howdy! I just found a 1979 episode of BJ and the Bear on YouTube, guest-starring Jack Kelly as a no-nonsense Treasury agent. It's not exactly Maverick, but, boy, does this show bring back memories. I remember watching it with my younger brother and sister. It also reminds me of my late older brother. He was a long-haul trucker who piloted a big red rig, sort of like the one BJ drives here.

Well, anyway, here's BJ and JK. Except for Part 5, embedding is disabled, so I can post only the links to Parts 1-4 of the episode below. Jack Kelly shows up near the middle of Part 3; his best scenes are in Part 4.
