Happy Father's Day 2020! :)

Happy Father's Day!

To celebrate, I present an unusual 1959 photo of Jack Kelly, James Garner and JG's step-daughter, Kimberly:

Kimberly looks like she's saying "Give me your autograph or else!" to JK.

You may be wondering why JK is in costume for Maverick and JG isn't. The caption on the reverse explains: "On a day when he was not required for scenes in Up Periscope, a Lakeside Production for Warner Bros., star James Garner brings his daughter, Kimberly, to the studio for a visit and to watch the filming of scenes for other pictures in production. Jack Kelly, who co-stars with Jim in the Maverick television series, is scared to death of the way Kimberly is handling a gun."

NOTE: This vintage photo has been in the Kellection for a while and I like it because it's a rare glimpse at JK and JG behind the scenes of Maverick. However, I've been somewhat torn about posting it here because it also shows a child pointing a gun at another human being. Yes, I know it's a gag photo, the gun was probably a prop and obviously no Jack Kellys were harmed during the making of this picture. On the other hand, firearm handling is no laughing matter, so here are some basic tips to help ensure that every day is happy for each Dad and child:
  • Treat all guns as if they are loaded
  • Point guns in a safe direction
  • Don’t rely on a gun’s “safety”

...And Jack the Dad :)

Happy Father's Day!

Here's a photo of Jack Kelly's pop, John A. "Jack" Kelly, Sr., dancing with JK's younger sister, Karolee, in 1939:

According to the caption, Mr. Kelly was called "Jack" even by his children. And although it states that Karolee would make her screen debut in Gone With the Wind, I'm not sure if she actually appears in the film. She did go on to play minor roles in movies and on TV, but GWTW isn't among her credits on the Internet Movie Database.

Please stay tuned for more about JK (Jr., that is!) in TDS. :)

Quoteth Pappy... :)

Happy Pappy's Day!

To celebrate our dads, here are some sayings from Beauregard "Pappy" Maverick which were compiled in a television magazine many, many moons ago:

"MAVERICKS QUOTE 'PAPPY'

Bret and Bart Maverick are mavericks because of one man--Beauregard Maverick, their pappy.

As a public service, to explain how Bret (James Garner) and Bart (Jack Kelly) got that way, here are philosophical remarks they learned at Beau's knee:

As my pappy used to say, there is no limit to the depths a man will soar for love.'

My old pappy always told me: 'Son, it's not how fast you draw that counts, but what you draw when you draw.'

My old pappy always told me, 'Son, it isn't how you play the game, it's whether you win or lose.'

As our dear old pappy used to say, 'If at first you don't succeed--try something else.'"

So, what's your favorite saying from Maverick's pappy--or from your own pappy? :)

Tee Time Pt. III - A Father's Day Finale and Coming Attractions! :)

Happy Father's Day to All Daddies!

I couldn't think of a better day to wrap up our look at Jack Kelly and golf, what with lots of pops getting new clubs for Dad's Day and the U.S. Open in full "swing".

JK participated in many celebrity golf tournaments over the years. Below is a terrific photo from one such event. A handwritten note on the back of the photo says, "Bill D. and Jack Kelly - Celebrity Golf 1964". (If anyone can provide more info about this pic, please let me know!)

And, here's another great glimpse of JK in golfing togs. This color image was scanned from a vintage transparency which came with a bunch of other celebrity slides I purchased some time ago. I don't know when or where this was snapped, but I love JK's tousled hair!  And, as far as I know, this slide has never been published--until now. :)

COMING SOON IN TDS:
  • Bon Appetit, JK!
  • All the world's a stage--especially when Jack Kelly is the star!
  • And more--stay tuned! :)

Happy Pappy's Day! :)

La Bartista and "TDS" wish every Pappy
a fantastic Father's Day! :)

Incidentally, here's the scoop on this amazing Maverick publicity photo. The original ABC network caption reads, "James Garner greets James Garner with Jack Kelly's approval when the Maverick brothers--Bret (Garner) and Bart (Kelly) introduce their 'Pappy' on the first show of the third season of ABC-TV's Warner Bros.-produced Maverick, Sunday, Sept. 13 [1959] (7:30-8:30 PM, EDT). Garner plays the dual role."

The photo is an excellent example of photo editing, but I can't determine how the two images of Garner were merged. His hands fit together perfectly in the handshake, and I can't detect any tell-tale "cut and paste" lines (this was decades before Photoshop) in either image. Oh well, maybe it was just Maverick magic. ;-)
