The Kelly Family Way! :)

Hello Everyone!

On January 13, 1965--55 years ago today--The Family Way opened at the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway.

It closed on January 16, after only five performances.

But, Jack Kelly, the star of the play, beamed as he posed with his big sister, Nancy, in this incandescent candid image scanned from a color slide in the Kellection:

What a fantastic Kelly family portrait!

Here's the cover of the Playbill, like the one Ms. Kelly is holding:

Well, it's the TDS way to share photos and stories about JK with you, so please stay tuned for more! :)

A Kelly Called Carol :)

Happy Monday!

Usually, when we see a photo of Jack Kelly and his sister, that sister is his older sibling, Nancy.

Well, here's a pic of JK with his younger sister, Carol (a.k.a. Karolee or Carolee), from a Japanese movie magazine:

Carol played minor roles in films and on TV during the 1950's and 1960's. Big brother Jack seems to be looking askance at Carol's skimpy costume, or maybe he's just pointing out a run in her hose. ;>

I think this is the first photo I've seen of JK and CK together as adults. The magazine in which the pic was printed is dated 1962, but the photo itself probably dates to 1959, when Carol played a stripper named "Fay Dawn" in "Girl In Trouble", an episode of the Warner Bros. detective series Bourbon Street Beat.

When "Girl In Trouble" was rerun in the summer of 1960, Carol told a newspaper reporter that JK visited her on the set. And, she revealed it was actually rather nerve-wracking to have Bart Maverick on Bourbon Street:

What a fun backstage peek at the Kelly clan!

Incidentally, another look at JK and Maverick from Japan will be featured in TDS very soon, so please stay tuned. :)

JK The "Mistrot" Tot :)

Happy Monday Everyone!

In keeping with the accent on Jack Kelly's youth, I now present a Kellectible which is so rare I didn't even know it existed, until it joined the Kellection:

A 1930 casting directory for "Mistrot".

What is Mistrot? It was a modeling agency in New York City. I was able to find almost no other information about it, except for this 1932 ad in a New York City newspaper:

But, look who I found inside the directory:

Yep, it's JK as a toddler! :)

I know we've seen this charming image many times before--even in this blog--but here it is, nice and clear and in its original context.

This is JK's Mistrot page:

("Lackawanna" was a telephone exchange in NYC.)

JK's little big sis, Nancy Kelly, is in the directory, too. Flashing her winsome smile, she was already a seasoned child actress with film credits at Paramount, Fox and Universal Studios:

Plus, I believe this is the Kelly kids' mom, actress and model Ann Mary "Nan" Kelly:

What a fascinating artifact from JK's early days in showbiz!

There are some other famous names in the directory as well, such as Natalie Schafer (later "Lovey Howell" on Gilligan's Island) and Vilma Ebsen (sister and one-time dancing partner of Buddy Ebsen).

Please stay tuned for much more in TDS! :)

Happy Birthday Mrs. Kelly! :)

Hello Everyone!

There's a birthday celebration underway at the Kelly house. But, Jack Kelly is nowhere in sight. Jack Kelly, Junior, that is. The handsome gent in this pic is actually his pop, who was also called Jack Kelly. And, it's plain to see where Junior got his good looks.

Speaking of good looks, that's JK Jr.'s sister Nancy on the right, and, in the center is their mom, birthday girl Nan Kelly.

The photo is dated January 1942. A handwritten notation on the back reads, "Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kelly and daughter Nancy at Mrs. Kelly's birthday party."

And, yes--Mrs. Kelly is wearing a ring on both pinkies. ;->

A Global "Affair" :)

Hello!

From their very beginning, American movies have been enjoyed by audiences around the globe. That's why the Kellection now contains German-language publicity material for Hong Kong Affair, which was filmed on location in the then-British colony and starred Yankee actors Jack Kelly and May Wynn.

Here's a lovely shot of JK and MW on an original lobby card advertising Die Todesfalle von HongKong (which Google roughly translates as Death Trap of Hong Kong!):

JK shines from the cover of the film's four-page program:

The program contains photo montages and a list of cast and credits:

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that May Wynn somewhat resembles Nancy Kelly in the headshot below?

More photo montages, and a German-language synopsis of the film's plot.

By the way, another popular method of movie marketing is the "sneak preview", where lucky audiences get to peek at a new film before it's released. In the spirit of that time-honored tradition, here's a sneak preview of my newest blog. It goes "live" on 5/18/2012 at 8:00 pm ET. Please take a gander and let me know what you think, about it and/or this posting about JK and Die Todesfalle von HongKong on TDS. Thanks a million! :)

Love and Kisses--And Roses--For Sis! :)

Howdy Everyone!

Here's another rare pic of Jack Kelly with his older sister, Nancy Kelly, in 1964. The siblings are having an impromptu family reunion in Chicago. The reason? I'll let the caption explain:

"Nancy Kelly, star of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which opened at the Studebaker Theatre, was pleasantly surprised by her brother Jack. He flew to Chicago from Los Angeles via American Airlines to open in a new play, Love and Kisses, which will open at the Drury Lane Theatre, March 3. Jack Kelly played Bart Maverick on TV."

Incidentally, JK's stint in the play Love and Kisses led to him being cast in the film version, which was directed and co-written by Ozzie Nelson. JK played the reel-life father of Ozzie's real-life son, Rick Nelson. (Rick's real-life wife, Kristin, played his reel-life wife in the movie.)

And, in November 1964, Nancy Kelly earned the prestigious Sara Siddons award for her performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Ms. Kelly was the only person at the time to have won the Sara Siddons award twice. The first time was during the 1955-'56 season for her role in the play The Bad Seed.

Jack Kelly: Howdy, Sis! :)

Hello Everybody!

At last, I have a photo of Jack Kelly with his sister, actress Nancy Kelly, to share with you:

As you can see, there is definitely a family resemblance, especially around the eyes.

The caption on this photo (which is stamped 10/17/1955) reads: "Nancy Kelly, who plays one of the leading roles in Warner Bros' production, The Bad Seed, is met at the airport by her brother, Jack Kelly, upon her arrival from New York. Jack is the leading man of Warner Bros' television series, Kings Row for ABC-TV".

Jack Kelly: Happy Birthday Nancy Kelly

"TDS" remembers Jack Kelly's older sister, acclaimed actress Nancy Kelly, who was born 90 years ago today in Lowell, MA. Ms. Kelly is shown above
at age 18 as "Zee" in the 1939
