A "Gem" of a Birthday :)

"Yay! It's Saturday! Nothing to do but kick back, eat a little hay and watch some Mr. Ed reruns. But, I have a funny feeling I'm forgetting something..."

"Yikes--it's my old buddy Jack's birthday! How could I forget such an important day? I gotta bake him a cake, but I'm out of carrots! I know: I'll run over to the General's store!"

"Hey General, I need some carrots!"

"Great horny toads--a talkin' hoss! Sorry, I'm fresh out of carrots. I'm expectin' a shipment any day now...probably Wednesday."

"Whoa--I really need them today. But, thanks anyway, General."

"I remember a friend of Jack's talking about carrots. I'll gallop over to her house--maybe she can help me."

"Pardon me, Countess, but would you have any carrots?"

"But of course, Goldie--I have many carats!"

"Those are the strangest looking carrots I've ever seen, but they'll have to do. Merci, Countess!"

"Now, to hurry home and bake that cake!"

"Happy Birthday, Jack!"

"Why, thank you, Goldie! As usual, the cake is delicious, but it's kind of crunchy. Did you add something different this year?"

"Er, um...walnuts!"

"Are they Diamond walnuts?"

"Uh, you might say that."

"I think I just broke a tooth."

"Broken tooth? I'm your huckleberry!"

"Hey, that's my line!"

"Wow, what a crazy dream! Goldie forgot it was my birthday, and ran out of carrots and baked my cake with diamonds, and then Doc Holliday and a blue dog showed up--it was a real nightmare. Hee hee: a night mare."

"I'd never forget your birthday, Jack--but I'd like to forget that joke."

Happy 90th Birthday, JK, from

Quoteth Pappy... :)

Happy Pappy's Day!

To celebrate our dads, here are some sayings from Beauregard "Pappy" Maverick which were compiled in a television magazine many, many moons ago:

"MAVERICKS QUOTE 'PAPPY'

Bret and Bart Maverick are mavericks because of one man--Beauregard Maverick, their pappy.

As a public service, to explain how Bret (James Garner) and Bart (Jack Kelly) got that way, here are philosophical remarks they learned at Beau's knee:

As my pappy used to say, there is no limit to the depths a man will soar for love.'

My old pappy always told me: 'Son, it's not how fast you draw that counts, but what you draw when you draw.'

My old pappy always told me, 'Son, it isn't how you play the game, it's whether you win or lose.'

As our dear old pappy used to say, 'If at first you don't succeed--try something else.'"

So, what's your favorite saying from Maverick's pappy--or from your own pappy? :)

Adam West

1928-2017

Adam West appeared with Jack Kelly in the Maverick episodes "A Fellow's Brother" and "Pappy" (shown above), and in the Batman episodes "Hot Off the Griddle"/"The Cat and the Fiddle". Rest in peace, Mr. West.

Remembering...

1927-2017

“George [Lazenby], Timothy [Dalton] and Pierce [Brosnan], we’ve been together, the four of us. But Sean, Sean really was sort of not that enamored of being confused with James Bond all the time. Sean … damn good actor, but he felt that he was only being remembered for Bond. I personally don’t give a damn. I just want to be remembered as somebody who paid his debts.”--Sir Roger Moore, National Public Radio (NPR) interview, 2014

You will be remembered for far more than that, Sir Roger. Thank you for all your roles (including Beau Maverick) and especially for your work as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.  Rest in peace.

Jack and Sally Together Again! :)

Happy Saint Patrick's Day Everyone!

In honor of St. Paddy's day, TDS presents another bit of ephemera from Jack Kelly's 1952 film, Sally and Saint Anne, a comedy about the O'Moynes, a wacky but loveable Irish-American family:

This rare window card isn't in the best shape. It's browned and faded with age (it's 65 years old). It's also badly creased in spots. And poor Grandpa O'Moyne  (Edmund Gwenn) has a hole in his nightshirt! But, the graphics are still colorful and, of course, JK is up there in the family portrait.

Below is a close-up of JK as muddling magician "Mike O'Moyne" beside his mother (played by Frances "Aunt Bee" Bavier, complete with rolling pin):

Much more about Sally can be found here and here.

And, radio station WJCU is again streaming 18 hours of authentic Irish music, starting at 6:00 am ET this morning (3/17) and ending at midnight. The link to listen is here. Enjoy!

Please stay tuned for more movie memories with JK and TDS.

A Valentine's Day Question :)

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!

Last summer, I posted a look at Jack Kelly from a Brazilian movie magazine called Cinelandia. I just added another issue of Cinelandia to the Kellection. This issue not only contains some wonderful pix of JK inside the magazine, but features him on the Valentine-red cover as well (along with Robert Colbert as brother Brent):

The banner just above Bart and Brent reads (roughly translated from Portuguese): "Cinelandia Asks: Should Cowboy Heroes Get Married?" Apparently, the question was prompted by a story arc on Bonanza which almost had Adam Cartwright (Pernell Roberts) marrying a widow with a young daughter. Their wedding never happened, supposedly because Bonanza's female fans demanded that Adam remain single.

The cover article begins (again, roughly translated):

"The good guys from the 'Far West' are the only men in the world who need the approval of thousands of people to go to the altar. Marriage may be the aim of many of them, but the 'yes' depends on the TV viewers. Should the cowboys settle down to family life? Or should they keep chasing bandits? This depends on you and Cinelandia wants to know your opinion."

On the cover, bachelor Bart's opinion of marriage seems to be "No thanks". But, inside the magazine, he enthusiastically aims some affection in the direction of pretty Karen Steele, while brother Bret (James Garner) seems to second that emotion. Ms. Steele guest-starred on two episodes of Maverick (with JK in the episode "You Can't Beat The Percentage" and with JG in "Point Blank") and was later linked romantically to JK in real-life following his 1964 divorce from wife Donna (May Wynn) Kelly.

Below, Bart and Bret are barely visible behind a bevy of potential brides:

Actually, these are some of the many actresses who co-starred opposite JK and JG in Maverick. The photo is a bit grainy, but some of the ladies I recognize are Ruta Lee, Patricia Crowley, Adele Mara, Joi Lansing, Ms. Steele, Marie Windsor, and Arlene Howell. This gathering of glamor gals appears to be from the same shoot as this photo.

Well, Bart Maverick may have escaped matrimony, but he still captures our hearts. :)
