Aloha JK! :)

Aloha!

In honor of Hawaii's statehood day (August 21, 1959), here's an autographed photo of Jack Kelly signing autographs for some young fans in Hawaii:

I'm fairly certain this photo was taken in June 1959, when JK and wife Donna vacationed in Oahu. It's hard to tell from the scan, but the envelope JK is signing says "Hawaiian Village", which is the name of the magnificent resort built by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser. Kaiser owned Kaiser Aluminum, the sponsor of Maverick, and was also a strong supporter of Hawaiian tourism. Linda Alexander reports in her biography A Maverick Life--The Jack Kelly Story that although Kaiser himself invited the Kellys to vacation at the Hawaiian Village, they somehow ended up being billed $2000 for their stay. JK refused to pay the bill and that was the end of the matter!

As for the inscription on the photo, it says, "For Charles - Aloha and thanks for being my friend! Best Always, Jack Kelly" ("Thanks for being my friend" seems to be one of JK's favorite inscriptions--I've seen it on quite a few of the photos he autographed.) I'm not sure who Charles was, however. The person who sold the photo to me said it was found among the personal items of a man named Charles Barthrop, but they couldn't confirm if he was the "Charles" in the inscription.

Well, "Mahalo รข nui" ("thank you very much") for reading TDS today! :)

Jack Kelly DVD News: Maverick and More! :)

Howdy Everyone!

For the past few months I've been haunting various entertainment sites in search of news about the Maverick Season 2 DVD set.

YAY! TVShowsOnDVD finally came through for me today with the release date (April 23) and cover artwork for the upcoming Maverick release:

If you ask me, I think this set will be a vast improvement over Season One...as far as the cover art goes, that is.  Of course, the fact that JK is in more episodes in Season Two can't hurt either.   ;-)

BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE!

Maverick Season 2 isn't the only Jack Kelly related DVD set about to be released. The fantastic folks at Shout! Factory are releasing The Hardy Boys: Season 3 on February 12 in the US and Canada. This is the 10-episode final season where Jack Kelly rode herd on the Hardys at the Justice Department. It's available for pre-release now directly from Shout! for only $18.98. It would make a great Valentine's Day gift--for yourself, or any other JK fan. :)

AND:

By now, you've probably heard about the big doings at the Huntington Beach Library scheduled for January 26, but in case you haven't, here's a link with all the info. It sounds like it's going to be a splendid event featuring our friend Linda J. Alexander (along with some pretty amazing guest stars, I'm told). Any JK fans who are able to attend are in for a rare treat, I'm sure. Believe me, I would give anything to be in HB on 1/26,  but, alas...Well, if any reader attends and would like to share the experience, I have a guest blogger spot all warmed up for you here on TDS. Just drop me a line!

I have some other fun stuff planned for TDS in 2013, including a special look at little Jack Kelly...or Jack Kelly when he was little. However you want to look at it, it's going to be big. Stay tuned--and thanks so much for reading TDS.  :)

Maverick Madness! :)

Howdy!

The complete first season of Maverick is now officially on DVD and the glowing reviews are rolling in. For example, the "DVD Talk" website gives the set a "Highly Recommended" rating, along with an outstanding review that not only features photos of Jack Kelly and James Garner, but also mentions JK very favorably. :)

And, a little bird told me that Linda J. Alexander, author of the wonderful A Maverick Life - The Jack Kelly Story, will discuss the book and its subject on "TV Confidential", an online radio program about television hosted by Ed Robertson. Should be fun, as Mr. Robertson also authored a book about the Maverick TV series. Click here for the show's blog, which includes schedule information and even some cool videos showcasing JK. Enjoy!

FIRST LOOK: "A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story" :)

Hello Everyone!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I sure did. And, I am especially thankful because Linda Alexander, author of the newly released biography A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story, graciously permitted me to have an advance peek at the book. Here's my review:

With A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story, author Linda Alexander lassoes the reader's interest and doesn't turn it loose until the very last sentence as she explores the colorful life of Jack Kelly, who played charming brother "Bart" to James Garner's wily "Bret" on the popular Maverick television series.

Ms. Alexander introduces us to the actor, born John Augustus Kelly, Jr., whose theatrical family roots stretched all the way back to Ireland. Kelly's mother Nan was an ambitious model who pushed all but one of her four children into show biz careers. His older sister was Nancy Kelly, who began acting as a child and matured into an acclaimed leading lady. Jack Kelly himself performed as a youngster in films, in radio, and on stage. Following a grown-up stint in the military, he moseyed back into films and then into television.

After headlining on Maverick for five years, Kelly drifted into perennial TV guest stardom, pausing along the way to appear in movies and in summer stock. He even emceed a game show. Kelly also made successful forays into business and politics. He served as city councilman and mayor in Huntington Beach, California--while still accepting occasional acting roles--before his tragic death at age 65 in 1992.

A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story is a brisk read, but it doesn't skimp on detail or on insight into Kelly's life. In addition to thoroughly researching her subject, Ms. Alexander obtained invaluable input from Kelly's family members (including both of his wives and his beloved daughter) along with memories from his fellow thespians such as Sir Roger Moore and James Drury, star of The Virginian.

The author unmasks the complicated human being inside the ebullient entertainer and pulls no punches. For example, many fans have wondered why Jack Kelly's success on Maverick didn't translate into enduring major stardom. Ms. Alexander traces part of the answer to Kelly's predilection to alcohol. She also reveals that the actor's formative family ties kept him bound far into adulthood. He was deeply affected by upheavals in his personal and professional lives and by events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Yet, Kelly remained in denial about his own life-threatening health condition until it was too late.

However, A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story is by no means a "downer". The reader also meets the Jack Kelly who was a loving father, a lively practical joker, an accomplished golfer, an expert cook, a talented writer, a dedicated politician, and a man who geniunely loved--and was loved by--some of the most glamorous gals in Hollywood.

And, once and for all, Linda Alexander busts the myth that Jack Kelly was just the "other guy" on Maverick. Ms. Alexander uncovers the behind-the-scenes intrigue and restores Kelly to his proper place in the Maverick equation.

A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story is generously illustrated with rare black and white photos from all phases of Kelly's life and career. Plus, the arresting color portrait on the cover perfectly captures the handsome actor in his most famous role: Bart Maverick.

As Linda Alexander puts it, "Jack Kelly really LIVED". A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story proves that he did, indeed.

"Hello Bart! Hello Bret!" :)

Hello All!

I found an unusual version of the Maverick theme song on YouTube. Performed by Johnny Gregory & his orchestra with the Michael Sammes Singers, this 1960 recording includes audio "cameos" from Bart and Bret, and even Dandy Jim Buckley! Plus, there are some mighty nice scenes of our boys in the video. Enjoy! :)

And speaking of enjoying, I listened to the "On the Grid" broadcast featuring Linda Alexander discussing A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story. It was great to hear Linda, and the voices of the JK fans who called in (including Janet T. and "Prof. Plum"). It was also a special treat to hear JK's widow, Jo, and his daughter, Nicole Garner, who is celebrating her birthday this weekend. (Happy Birthday, Nicole!)

Plus, wonderful news: A Maverick Life is set to be released around the end of this month and is now available for pre-order on the BearManor Media site! :)

Jack Kelly - Maverick is His Name, Too! :)

Hello Everybody,

I noticed that Linda Alexander, author of the forthcoming Jack Kelly biography, has proposed a campaign on Facebook to "rebrand" Maverick in the public's mind so that they'll think of Jack Kelly as well as James Garner whenever the show or role is mentioned.

And I'm all for it! :)

In fact, that's one of the reasons I started this blog, to help people remember--or perhaps learn for the first time--that James Garner wasn't the only Maverick.

Now, I have nothing against Jim Garner. He's a well-loved actor who's had a long, successful showbiz career. I grew up enjoying Garner in The Rockford Files and those Polaroid commercials like everyone else. And, if he doesn't devastate you at the end of The Notebook, well, then you'd better make sure your heart hasn't turned to stone.

However, when it comes to Maverick, usually James Garner is all you hear about. It's as if Jack Kelly has been mysteriously edited out of people's memories of Maverick.

Believe me, I've received plenty of blank stares at antiques shows when vendors ask me if I'm looking for anything in particular and I tell them I collect JK memorabilia. Then, I mention Maverick.

"Oh, I have lots of Maverick stuff with James Garner, but, sorry, nothing with Jack Kelly."

About a year ago, when I first became aware of JK, Encore Westerns was running Maverick promos where present-day poker players gushed, "Maverick is James Garner!" There was nary a mention of JK, or even Roger Moore. One would have thought that Garner was the lone star of the show.

Shortly before that, John McCain and Sarah Palin branded themselves "mavericks" during the 2008 presidential campaign. Blogs and newspaper op-ed columns were filled with references to the "real Maverick", and as shorthand they usually showed a still of James Garner in his black Bret costume. Bart never made it to the primaries.

However, what irks me even more than Jack Kelly's contribution to Maverick being forgotten is when it's simply ignored, or summarily dismissed. Like when people say,"Jack Kelly was the other guy. James Garner was Maverick."

Or, "Jack Kelly was the guy we put up with to see James Garner in Maverick."

Even JK once said, "James Garner was Maverick--I was his brother."

Someone on Facebook wondered if such statements actually bothered Jack Kelly.

Apparently, they did.

I found an excerpt from a 1985 James Garner biography by Raymond Strait which quotes JK:

"...So far as I was concerned, the only negative aspect of Maverick, which I learned to understand and worked very hard to overcome, was being known as Bret Maverick's brother.

"Jim Garner was Maverick. The public always saw him bigger than me and that hurt because it diminished my posture. I was painfully aware of it."

Strait says that JG and JK never discussed this disparity, but both were aware of it. JK concluded:

"As the winner of the battle of the Mavericks without having to lift a finger, Jim didn't need to say anything...but I regard that man with genuine appreciation."

I don't think Jack Kelly knew how really good he was as Bart, or how much he was appreciated. He stayed with Maverick from 1957 until it ended in 1962. His last words on screen were spoken as a Maverick in 1991.

Yet, James Garner is still the default Maverick.

So, let's follow Linda's lead and spread the word: Jack Kelly is Maverick, too! :->
